Early childhood screening is a process used to identify potential developmental delays or needs in young children. Research shows that early screening and intervention greatly improve a child's long-term growth, learning, and well-being. At Bighorn Development Center, we offer no-cost developmental screenings for children from birth through age 5 to help families understand and support their child’s development. The early years are full of milestones, first smiles, first steps, & first words. Nearly 90% of brain development happens before age 3.

These short, engaging screenings help track your child’s progress in key developmental areas. If additional support is needed, we are ready to assist because every child deserves a strong start.

What We Screen For

Our trained staff assess multiple areas of development to ensure your child is progressing in age-appropriate ways. These screenings are designed to identify strengths and potential areas of need as early as possible, because early detection leads to better outcomes.

Each screening is conducted in a warm, child-friendly environment and provides families with valuable insight into their child’s overall development. By recognizing each child’s unique strengths and needs across all areas of development. we take a whole-child approach to support long-term success.

We recommend having at least one screening before age 2 and again before your child turns 5.

  • Assesses middle ear function and sound detection. Screens eye health and identifies potential vision concerns.

  • The ability to use & understand language.

    Typical milestones:

    • Babbling by 12 months

    • Two-word spontaneous phrases by 24 months

    • Five- to six-word sentences by age 4

  • Using large & small muscles for movement, balance, reaching, & grasping.

    Typical milestones:

    • Intentional hold and release of an item by 24 months

    • Walks up and down stairs without help by age 3

    • Hops and stands on one foot for 2 seconds by age 5

  • Ability to think, reason, and find solutions.
